Ladder matches can be a great shortcut for a promotion like NXT that needs to hide a couple of green wrestlers in a multi-person match. Unfortunately, the more they rely on them, the more soulless they become.

The NXT Women’s North American Championship ladder match wasn’t bad, nor did it bore the fans – quite the opposite - but it was little more than a series of spots involving ladders. One wrestler climbed, another saved, then she climbed, another saved, repeat. After a while, it became way too repetitive and mindless until the finishing sequence.

Maybe there should be a moratorium on ladder matches for a year to let things simmer. Or just structure the matches to be more than spot-spot-spot-spot.

It feels terrible thumbing down a match where six women put their bodies on the line and took some gnarly bumps, but if they’re going to put themselves through that, then give them a better story and showcase.
