4 Ups & 4 Downs From WWE SmackDown (27 March - Results & Review)

1. Sweet Double Turn Build Continues

Sami Zayn WWE United States Title

Unsurprisingly, Sami Zayn beating Carmelo Hayes to win the United States Title in a fine match proved to be the best bout of the night. It was guaranteed quality a-go-go as soon as these guys stepped foot in the ring together. Trick Williams getting involved made sense due to his ongoing issues with Sami as well. Now, he’s accidentally given Zayn a path to WrestleMania 42.

You know there’s a double turn incoming here, because the announcers spent a bit of time talking about how popular Trick is. They’re acknowledging the reaction of fans here, which is interesting when they’re conveniently ignoring the same adulation for Randy Orton. Anyway, this was a really fun to watch match that pushed a story forwards for ‘Mania. It's tough to be mad at it, although it is a shame that Hayes could be pushed out.

He doesn't deserve to sit in catering come Vegas, not after working so many cracking matches for that United States Title since winning it from Ilja Dragunov in December. The only thing creative would need to be careful of is not to dilute what's happening between Trick and Sami with somebody else for the sake of it. Drafting in Melo's history with Williams at the eleventh hour could make things messy.

It's full steam ahead to Trick winning the United States Title, turning babyface, and facilitating Zayn's own heel turn. He's been ready to blow up and go rogue for ages now, so being a destructive, salty veteran will breathe new life into Sami's act. Plus, WWE can get there by simultaneously pushing a fresh face. It's win-win.
