4 Ups & 5 Downs From WWE SummerSlam 2025 - Sunday (Results & Review)
WWE closes show with a highly controversial move, overshadowing a really good main event.
These days, WWE has made it clear that they are all about “making moments” and “going viral” with their product, not producing the best wrestling show they possibly can. Their SummerSlam opening videos, narrated by Druski, explicitly stated that, showing video highlights and YouTubers reacting to them.
Well, after Sunday’s main event, there is plenty of online chatter and viral content being generated about WWE, though it might not be what they hoped to garner.
WWE welcomed Brock Lesnar back to the fold, bringing the formerly blacklisted superstar in to confront John Cena after a much better-than-expected main event against Cody Rhodes. The return of the Beast sparked immediate controversy and marred Cena’s best match in several years.
However, it also punctuated an underwhelming night that started strong enough with two good matches before descending into an overbooked plunder marathon, a boring steel cage match, and an inoffensive, but empty calorie tribute to Eddie Guerrero.
All told, SummerSlam 2025 was less about a quality wrestling show and more about the big moments, with CM Punk’s World Heavyweight Championship win and Seth Rollins’ immediate cash-in dominating the conversation Saturday night, and Lesnar’s return overshadowing everything on Sunday. The highlight videos will be extremely popular, but the number of fans going back and rewatching both nights in full is going to be much smaller.
