4 Ups And 4 Downs From Last Night’s WWE NXT (June 10)

4. Bull Dempsey Has A Problem

To say that Bull Dempsey has gone off the boil is quite an understatement. While fans initially dug his throwback brawler style, his 50s-era singlet and chest hair, fans have seen his stock lower considerably over the last few months. Being utterly steamrollered in a turgid, uninspired feud with Baron Corbin (including the least violent no-dq match in WWE history) didn't help, and the fans have turned on him somewhat, taking to chanting "sh*t" after his entrance music shouts the word "bull". NXT have come up with a somewhat strange twist for Dempsey's character, in an attempt to bring him back to relevancy: they're turning him into a slob. Ok then. During his match with Tyler Breeze, Dempsey began to chase the King of Cuteville around the ring. After barely even a lap, Bull was out of breath, he began to hold his side, implying that he had a stitch. The fans began to chant "cardio" at him, and when he got back in the ring he was easily pinned by Breeze. Then, in a backstage segment with William Regal, he couldn't stop eating. This is a bizarre and potentially ruinous route to take, especially for someone with the capacity to be a monster heel. The NXT fans have a good sense of humour though, and with careful handling (and funny-but-not-too-funny story progression) this could make Dempsey endearing, but in an athletic environment, giving someone an non-athletic gimmick is dangerous territory.
