Demonstrating the randomness of WWE, John Cena ended up finding the gimmick that would make him a star via a throw-away segment on a Halloween Smackdown broadcast. He turned up wearing the most ridiculous outfit imaginable to the backstage Halloween party, then proceeded to do some rapping in the segment. It caught the attention of WWE creative, who then booked him as a Vanilla Ice character for the rest of 2002 and early 2003. It started getting Cena over, but good god it was cheesy. The cringe moments in his look and verbal went on to become a weekly thing.
