The Roman Reigns situation gets weirder and weirder.

Yes, he's a terribly ineffective babyface. No, he'll never be as over with the crowd as WWE want him to be. Yes, his Wellness Policy violation has cost him very little, and no, he won't be dropped as Vince McMahon's chosen one.

None of the above changed last night, but Reigns had a highly-effective evening despite his ongoing miscast status. The crowd's reactions were as off-balance as you'd expect, with Indianapolis cheering and chanting for Rusev early-on, but Reigns had actually won a significant portion of them over towards the US Title match's conclusion. Kevin Dunn's creative editing means it's best to take this with a pinch of salt, but it's still worth mentioning, and perhaps a sign that sects of the WWE Universe are realising that Reigns maybe isn't the boogeyman he's made out to be.

Roman, of course, defeated Rusev cleanly to become WWE United States Champion. The parallels with John Cena's 2015 defeat of Rusev are alarming, and will have the Bulgarian Brute's fanbase reaching for the panic button, but it's a good spot for Reigns. Like him or not, WWE management think very highly of the guy, and his win at least means the United States Championship will be treated with respect for as long as it's around his waist.
