5 Early Successes Of Triple H's Run As Head Of WWE Creative (And 5 Failures)
2. Failure - Drew McIntyre's Credibility
There was a case to be made, that when Drew McIntyre called his shot at Clash at the Castle earlier this year, he didn't feel anywhere near hot enough to be in with a chance of winning. Yes, the opportunity to crown the Scotsman in his home country was a big one, but did anyone do anything other than shrug?
But in the weeks leading up to his awesome battle with Roman Reigns, Triple H managed to reheat the 'Scottish Psychopath' in such a way that it didn't feel likely that he would win the belt. It felt necessary.
That's no easy achievement, considering McIntyre has felt bland as a babyface for over a year now, and there have been murmurs of boos on some occasions. The sword hasn't really helped, and the more Vince McMahon got control of Drew, the less important he felt.
That was reversed through a series of blockbuster promos, excellent matches and wild brawls that had built McIntyre up to be Roman's likely successor. Unfortunately, we didn't see that crowning moment at Clash, but what happened next completely undermined the hard work everyone had put it.
Reports suggest it wasn't supposed to air, but having McIntyre have his head patted by real fighter Tyson Fury was so patronising. Then, to make it worse, the two of them had a little sing song for the live crowd. Surely, after coming so close to his dream, McIntyre should have been devastated?
Where we go with him from here is anyone's guess.
