5 Early Successes Of Triple H's Run As Head Of WWE Creative (And 5 Failures)
3. Success - Elevation Of Midcard Titles
This is the one that Triple H deserves the most plaudits for.
There are too many title belts in wrestling. Across the industry, every company seems to have developed a crazy habit of just adding title belts, which undervalues the ones before them. With WWE, they had a unique problem (one of their own doing, mind) whereas both their World Titles were over the shoulder of a part-timer.
Make no mistake about it, Roman Reigns' run as the 'Head of the Table' is one of the best things to happen to wrestling in the last few years, but it creates a problem for the rest of the roster.
If he isn't there, what is there to fight for?
Well, as a man who made his initial splash in the business with the WWE Intercontinental Championship, Triple H had the answer. Make those belts mean something again.
It started off simple enough. Some gorgeous vignettes, running through the history and legacy of both the WWE Intercontinental and WWE United States Championships. But then, he ramped it up.
Marquee matches on a near weekly basis. Number one contenders matches, instead of just facing the champion until you eventually win. Defending them on the damn Premium Live Events.
But best of all, the champions feel like a big deal. The belts were on Lashley and Gunther, respectively, before Triple H took the wheel, but with the 'Tribal Chief' off television, Trips has managed to elevate both men to being worthy focal points. Bravo.
