5 Forgotten Gems From Classic WCW

2. The Dangerous Alliance Vs. Sting’s Squadron – WrestleWar ‘92

When you see Sting’s Squadron (Barry Windham, Dustin Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat, Nikita Koloff and, of course, Sting) pitted against Paul E. Dangerously’s awesome Dangerous Alliance (Rick Rude, Steve Austin, Arn Anderson, Bobby Eaton and Larry Zbyszko) inside the WarGames structure, you know straight away that you're in for something special.

With seven of the ten participants already in WWE Hall of Fame (with more surely to follow), the marquee alone speaks volumes. As far as WarGames matches go, this one does a great job in living up to hype and continues the legacy of the previous WarGames matches in what is one of the most brutal and violent matches of early WCW.

The bout gets off to a good start with PWI’s 1990 “Rookie of the Year”, Stunning Steve, mixing it up with WCW veteran and former Horsemen, Barry Windham. The match quickly gets out of control when Rude enters the fray and, with the subsequent introduction of Ricky Steamboar, the match kicks into a higher gear and all hell breaks loose.

From there, we see blood everywhere courtesy of an Austin blade job that could rival Dexter Morgan. The crowd explodes at the addition of every new participant and the action does not let up once.

From Madusa climbing atop the cage and Sting in pursuit to Koloff's questionable allegiance to Sting and the internal fighting between the Dangerous Alliance, the match is fantastic viewing; made all the more enjoyable with the constant presence of Dangerously (aka Paul Heyman) at ringside musing over his gameplan throughout.

With an inventive finish to cap it off, the match would get a rare 5 star rating from the notoriously hard to please Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer; giving the bout further credibility as true classic that’s well worth a watch.
