6. Negative - Stipulations For The Sake Of It

For me, this fifth and final negative is probably the most significant of the lot, and an issue that seems to come up year after year without fail.

Let’s start with a quick history lesson. Once upon a time, two guys would become embroiled in a feud so bitter that the only way to settle the score was to lock them both inside a cell and have them slog it out to the old-fashioned way. Sounds straightforward enough.

Then came the gimmick-themed PPVs. Suddenly, stipulations weren’t added because the feuds necessitated them, but because it was “that time of year again” and so whoever was holding a championship at the time was ordered to compete in whatever match happened to be the flavour of that month.

And surprise, surprise, that’s exactly what we’ve seen this year once more. Don’t get me wrong, the Hell in a Cell matches we’ve got on the card are likely going to be great, but wouldn’t it have been nice to see them engineered in a way that felt at least a little bit more organic, rather than simply because the calendar dictates it?
