5 Reasons The Undertaker's WWE Retirement Will Stick (& 5 Reasons It Won't)
9. WON'T: He's Done This Before
Remember at the end of Wrestlemania 33 when Undertaker left his hat, gloves, and duster in the center of the ring after his loss to Roman Reigns? That was three years ago.
Since then, WWE have played "will he, won't he" with Taker's farewell. His storyline the next year revolved around John Cena goating the seemingly retired Phenom into the ring. He came back to squash the cocky Cenation leader in less than three minutes, leading fans to wonder if it even counted as a return. Ditto for the Saudi Arabia matches, which are largely considered to be outside the WWE's main continuity.
WrestleMania 36 was an unambiguous return with Taker going all-out in his blood feud with AJ Styles, but even in the buildup to that cinematic clash, it wasn't clear if this would spell Undertaker's final tilt. When the Final Farewell was announced, that did away with any ambiguity surrounding the conclusion to Taker's career, but spurned fans know not to trust anything that looks like retirement at this point.
The Final Farewell ended with Taker turning his back to the ring and thrusting his fist in the air -- literally the exact same gesture as his goodbye at WrestleMania 33. How can you trust that?
