5 Reasons Why WWE Needs A New Mid-Card Championship

4. The Intercontinental Championship Tournament Was Great And Created Fresh Matchups

WWE just successfully executed a tournament for the #1 contendership for the Intercontinental Championship that successfully accomplished a number of goals. A) It finished the re-branding of Wade Barrett's character, B) It allowed for Cesaro to find a new top-tier opponent in the returning Rob Van Dam, and C) it created a three-way dance for the Extreme Rules PPV with Jack Swagger, Van Dam and Cesaro that was a new match on a roster where oftentimes match combinations get recycled ad nauseum. A "Universal Championship" tournament could do similar things. Imagine a tournament wherein Xavier Woods, Rusev, Kofi Kingston, Sami Zayn, Titus O'Neal, Corey Graves, Fandango and Dolph Ziggler were involved. Giving two NXT guys a spotlight position, as well as feasibly giving Rusev something to do other than beating up African-American wrestlers in under three minutes would be different. As well, fun TV matches with Fandango and Xavier Woods, and potentially matches with ZIggler and Graves, plus Ziggler and Zayn would be exciting segments.
