5 Things That Could Be Tony Khan’s HUGE Announcement On AEW Dynamite

5. A FIFTH Pay-Per-View?

Tony Khan has clarified that “the big announcement for Wednesday’s Dynamite” and “the person walking through the Forbidden Door” are “one and the same”.

However, Khan has previous with hyping a major reveal and delivering a second moments later to wrong-foot the audience into a state of overwhelming excitement. The fun reveal of the Exalted One on March 18, 2020 was doubled when Matt Hardy crashed the main event segment; similarly, at All Out 2021, Khan debuted Bryan Danielson and Adam Cole within minutes of one another. To quote the a legendary shoot interview, Khan is rather fond of the “double pop” - so might we be in for two announcements?

It's a very good time to dominate the pro wrestling discourse; WWE is stranded on SyFy to accommodate the Winter Olympics next week, allowing AEW to creep up on the all-important demo. A super-serving of mark-out content just might swing the conversation in AEW’s favour when WWE returns to USA.

Those that can allow themselves to criticise AEW in good faith have experienced an upsetting epiphany over the last two months; beyond the superb CM Punk Vs. MJF programme, the show has endured a wildly uneven run, and the long gap between Full Gear and Revolution might inform this uninteresting cycle of television. It’s a problem that has haunted AEW since its inception; rather than build anticipation slowly, ahead of the pay-per-views, too many transitional episodes of Dynamite just…exist as a procession of star versus obvious undercard loser matches.

AEW’s storytelling model doesn’t suit every programme. Is Darby Allin Vs. Andrade worthy of a saga? Ultimately, it’s a ****1/4-tier prospect with no must-see emotional resonance. We see ****1/4-tier matches on free TV most weeks. They need to get to the point.

Might the announcement of a fifth PPV correct a complaint that is creeping up in volume?
