Braun Strowman had seized his maiden singles title in the WWE when he defeated Shinsuke Nakamura to win the Intercontinental Championship, earlier this year. The fans felt that finally, the Intercontinental title would become as relevant as it once was, but unfortunately, the Creative team messed up his reign. 'The Monster Among Men' held the gold for over one month but lost it in his first title defense.

During his reign, he had a lackluster rivalry with the trio of Cesaro, Sami Zayn, and Nakamura. Elias appeared sporadically to help him out, but when he defended his title at WWE Elimination Chamber, the trio of heels overpowered him as Zayn stole the Intercontinental belt.

No one could understand the reason behind that move as immediately after that pay-per-view, Daniel Bryan and Drew Gulak entered the title picture. The current Universal Champion did not even try to win the crown back as he found himself in a match against Goldberg at WrestleMania 36. Now that he is holding the most prosperous prize on SmackDown, Vince McMahon must ensure that his regime is not like the one that he had with the mid-card accolade.
