5 Times Wrestling And Social Media Got Awkward

3. Stephanie McMahon: Ghoul

Stephanie has form on Twitter, even if nowadays she posts little else other than inspirational quotes and gym selfies. That's probably for the best.

In March 2015 - again, for perspective, that's one month removed from the time she really should have deleted her Twitter account altogether - Stephanie quoted Twitter co-founder Biz Stone's proclamation that "philanthropy is the future of marketing - it's the way brands are going to win". Essentially, if it wasn't already apparent, Stephanie revealed that WWE cared only about monetising grief and tragedy and distancing themselves from their complicity in the wider tragedy that is the professional wrestling industry.

Believing it is one thing - publicising it is another. In which marketing textbook did she learn how to undermine her marketing? Stephanie was born into the business of lying, and has compromised it entirely by telling the truth. We should also point out that McMahon posted this tweet on the same day that Connor Michalek was posthumously granted the inaugural Warrior's Award, undermining an otherwise lovely gesture with a blackened heart.

Stephanie portrays herself as an intelligent and ruthless woman in a man's world, and in fairness, she's half right. The woman is so cutthroat that, a full thirteen years after she delivered a chilling and unbelievably dumb comparison to the World Trade Center attacks and her father's 1994 steroid trial, she maintained in an interview with cynopsissports that the 9/11 tribute had to be her favourite episode of SmackDown.

Had to!
