5 Ups & 3 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Feb 6)
4. Bouncing Back
Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable (American Beta, if you will) worked a worthless tag match against Breezango last week. Designed primarily to get the duo over, it accomplished nothing, as it was too long to be a squash, but too short to bring anything meaningful to the table. Throw the teams' surprising lack of chemistry into the mixed, and you have a failed segment.
Fortunately, last night's clash with The Ascension was more successful. This doesn't make a lot of sense on paper, as most would agree that the Fashion Police's in-ring appeal far exceeds Konnor and Viktor's, but this match worked. The action was solid, the previous week's surprising lack of cohesion was nowhere to be found. Sure, the result was predictable, with Gable and Benjamin picking up the victory, but there'd be no sense in having them lose to a team like The Ascension, particularly if they're to remain relevant in the tag title hunt.
For all their flaws, Konnor and Viktor have settled into a nice little role as Breezango's protective big brothers. Keeping their matches short and succinct hides their weaknesses, and after years going nowhere as a Road Warriors knock-off act, it's good to see them find their footing.
