DOWNS…

3. ‘Tiffy Time’ A Broken Watch

Wrestlers having a signature call to the crowd is almost as old as WWE itself. But it is possible to overdo the sign and become obnoxious, threatening to make the superstar a one-dimensional character known only for that call.

We’re nowhere near there yet with Tiffany Stratton, but the rookie SmackDown superstar has hit upon her own signature hand sign, which she proceeded to use about 1,000 times during her triple threat match for the WWE Women’s Championship at Backlash.

“Tiffy Time” was a cute line Stratton used a few times in NXT that proved effective in conveying her ascension on the developmental brand. Upon heading to SmackDown, the line quickly became central to her character. The phrase is the lead-in to her new entrance theme, and someone in the back clearly has told her to tap her imaginary watch to convey that it is indeed “Tiffy Time.”

During her entrance and the match itself, Stratton did it so much that it became almost comical. Whenever she got five seconds of daylight, she made sure to tap her wrist to remind fans what time it was. It got so excessive that you had to wonder if it was a crutch for her to “play” to the fans, or if she was under orders to do it as often as possible.

Overall, this is a minor gripe and doesn’t diminish Stratton’s star power or budding aura, but she also should be careful to not become a one-note punchline character. This was more of an annoyance than anything else.
