5 Ups & 3 Downs From WWE Backlash 2024 (Results & Review)
3. Jey’s Best Singles Match?
Jey Uso versus Damian Priest never felt like a world title-level feud, despite WWE reminding fans repeatedly that they were fighting for the World Heavyweight Championship.
And as great as Jey’s entrance and presence is, the bell still has to ring, and more often than not, he’s turned in average performances.
However, Saturday’s title match between Priest and Uso was actually a lot better than one might have expected, with some solid exchanges and big move bombs being thrown around. Priest hitting two cyclone kicks before Jey countered with three thrust kicks, a spear and a splash was a particularly great moment. The action felt befitting of a world title match, even if the build and wrestlers themselves weren’t oozing that feeling – if that makes sense.
Even the Judgment Day drama, which could have overtaken the atmosphere of the match, worked well, with JD McDonagh being chastised for interfering and then paying dividends on the aforementioned spear/splash combo when he put Priest’s foot on the ropes. Damian lashing out and bossing JD and Finn Balor around afterward will likely play into more drama on Monday.
Good night overall for the World Heavyweight Championship.
