Downs…

3. Cheapening The Briefcase

The downside of using the Money in the Bank briefcase as a prop in a red-hot angle between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre might not be apparent in the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s PLE, but it really shouldn’t be ignored.

McIntyre won the MITB match by capturing the briefcase, then cashed in mid-match during the World Heavyweight Championship contest, only to have CM Punk cost him the match and lead to a failed cash-in, rendering the entire point of the briefcase irrelevant for another year.

That makes for two failed cash-ins in the past three years, and four of the past eight. That’s a pretty terrible batting average for what originally was considered to be an automatic World Title victory.

Yes, there’s the ongoing issue of McIntyre being so consumed by Punk that he can’t think straight, but that wasn’t what forced him to cash in Saturday night, and WWE itself has to be thinking broader and more long-term about things before feeding into a narrative that neuters one of your signature matches.
