3. Give Fans A Bit More Purpose
This writer firmly believes that story and character development trumps random matches.
There are exceptions, such as the cool Andrade vs. Carmelo Hayes series, but then that's been framed as a competitive shootout between rivals who have grown to detest one another. So, there is some story there (as well as title context). Michin vs. Piper Niven didn't have that to boast about; what is Mia Yim actually feuding over with Piper and Chelsea Green?
Sure, it's nice to see some non-title rivalries on the women's side, but Triple H can't just slap some combos together and call it a day. The boss seems to think he's doing enough with Michin to turn her into a strong character babyface, but the truth is somewhat different. She means little when she isn't tied to more important names like Bayley.
Hopefully, Michin and Green can make something of this random dumpster bout next week, but it remains to be seen if that rather out of the blue stipulation showdown will springboard either of them in the eyes of the audience. Fingers crossed and all that, eh?
