5 Ups & 3 Downs From WWE SmackDown (Aug 26)

3. Champ & Challenger Are Unmoved

Some fans on social media blasted this angle for being 'too comedic', but this writer fundamentally disagrees. Think about the story being told here: Sheamus is p*ssed that Gunther thinks he can march around referring to himself as a 'Ring General' when he's been fighting the best for decades.

Then, like generals, the pair stood still mid-ring as the grunts waged war around them. That's actually rather clever, and again shows WWE's current dedication to the most simple storytelling devices available to them. Sometimes, you don't really need to overthink pro wrestling, and this was proof of it.

Sheamus and Gunther will beat the tar out of one another in Cardiff come Clash At The Castle. Until then, they shouldn't really touch; framing violence all around the pair as they refused to flinch and stood staring holes through one another was the right decision.

Bring on the match.
