5 Ups & 3 Downs From WWE SmackDown (May 22)

1. The Tournament Focus

According to Bruce Prichard, Vince McMahon isn't too fond of running tournaments. The problem for big VKM is that he's usually pretty good at formatting them, and they're a popular method of mixing things up. Tourneys also happen to be an easy way of setting up kickass matches fans love to see.

Again, the finals of this IC sprint could be very fun.

Tournaments give the writing team clear focus too, and they must be thankful of that right now. Filling episodes of TV with engaging content is hard enough when there are lively crowds in the building, but it's even harder when matches and segments are playing before total silence. This tourney has been a blessing then.

WWE got the atmosphere spot on this week. Everyone involved sold their matches like they were life or death, the right workers were picked to win and the commentary team did a fine job of selling the entire concept as one that's the talk of the locker room.
