5 Ups & 4 Downs From AEW Dynamite (4 May)

3. Flippydoo Frenzy

Rey Fenix
AEW

Rey Fenix vs. Dante Martin was exactly what you thought it was going to be.

All flips, dives, and exchanges that should only be possible in video-games, it was a battle of oneupmanship to see whose bombs would land hardest. This started with Martin matching Fenix early on, catching Rey off-guard. On multiple occasions, Fenix would walk away from his own spectacular stunts, expecting his opponent to be downed. It's not often he faces something as athletic as Dante, however, forcing Fenix to adapt.

The Lucha Brother adapted not by changing his core strategy, but by going for increasingly elaborate flashpoints. As did Dante. Two of the flashiest guys in modern wrestling were inseparable for long stretches before Rey finally drove Dante's head into the mat for the three-count.

This wasn't as fluid as Fenix's peak matches, suggesting, perhaps, that he still has some rust to shake off after returning from injury. Nonetheless, the match came as advertised: a blistering spotfest.
