5 Ups & 4 Downs From WWE Raw (15 Oct - Results & Review)

2. Wait, What?

WWE has been doing such a good job in recent years of building wrestlers’ characters that when you run across a notable fumble, you have to call it out.

Bron Breakker is a clear success story in 2024, as they have figured out how to push him as a serious threat while acknowledging (in storyline and reality) that he is still learning and is prone to making mistakes. But a pre-taped promo on Monday night provided both positives and negatives.

On the positive side, Breakker showed that intensity and fire that has defined him in his short career. He offered an explanation of why he attacked Jey Uso last week: Bron offered his respect the week prior, but Jey didn’t properly reciprocate or show his respect for the former champion’s run with the Intercontinental Championship.

Breakker went on to note that both were second-generation superstars, but he quickly renounced any help from his family, saying he didn’t need the Steiner name, his father or uncle’s help, or anything from them. Understandably, he said all of this to differentiate himself from Jey, who has been “sucking off” his family’s legacy for 14 years.

Except… a tremendous amount of Breakker’s makeup is tied to his famous family. The use of the Frankensteiner, the singlets (which sometimes were replicas of ones the Steiner Brothers wore), the leather jacket, the barking dog routine, the power moves, and the constant comparisons to Scott and Rick.

Yes, heels lie. But this was presented as an earnest promo, not the typical delusional heel diatribe. It also wasn’t necessary here. Bron’s argument on its own was strong, even criticizing Jey for leaning on his family for so long. Why water down the point with that foolishness?

Scott is a former journalist and longtime wrestling fan who was smart enough to abandon WCW during the Monday Night Wars the same time as the Radicalz. He fortunately became a fan in time for WrestleMania III and came back as a fan after a long high school hiatus before WM XIV. Monday nights in the Carlson household are reserved for viewing Raw -- for better or worse.
