Drew McIntyre came into his Raw main event match against Sami Zayn a perfect 10-0 in their singles meetings. He left Raw with that unblemished record intact.
The match itself scanned more as a greatest hits album, with both men running through their offense, including Sami struggling to and finally connecting on a Blue Thunder Bomb… for a two-count. Drew struck out trying to land a Claymore, but he capitalized on an errant Helluva Kick attempt by rolling Zayn up and getting the pin – with his feet on the ropes.
The match itself was fine for what it was, but the bigger issue here is that Sami Zayn is headed into the Royal Rumble with everyone verbally knocking him down a peg below the main-eventers, and he can’t pick up a win against the man he’s never beaten – whom Seth Rollins defeated last week. To make matters worse, Sami tried to help Cody Rhodes fend off McIntyre after the match and accidentally booted the American Nightmare, the same as he did to Rollins last week.
Zayn started out the night with some false bravado to CM Punk about how he’s actually main-evented WrestleMania, but that distinction came in a tag match with Kevin Owens. Standing on his own, Sami is struggling once again, but KO has extended the olive branch for this weekend. If he’s doubting himself in any way, and if Karrion Kross’ urgings to take action that helps him rather than others, then is possible Owens’ offer could look reasonable.
