5 Ups & 5 Downs From WWE SmackDown (23 Jan - Results & Review)

4. Boring Main Event Drags

Some combinations just don't mesh well. For example, even legends like Steve Austin and The Undertaker toiled when trying to put on satisfying pay-per-view main events for years. Similarly, Scott Steiner and the English language has rarely been a great match. OK, couldn't resist that little joke. Scotty did cut some tasty promos in his time, and at least everyone remembers the bad ones.

Trick Williams vs. Damian Priest looks set to become the next match up WWE should avoid. It didn't work in the main event slot on this week's SmackDown. The whole match was a struggle, they didn't gel, and it was obvious from the first minute that Sami Zayn was going to cause the DQ. Then, the night ended with a pair of Randy Orton RKO’s to Trick and Sami, but it wasn’t enough to save the day.

Williams has clear star potential after coming up from NXT, but one thing needs repeating: Never, ever put him in the ring with Priest again. It wasn’t the right blend. Neither guy could lean on their power game, it looked like they were moving through treacle for around 99% of the thing, and those fans in Montreal (who normally go nuts for anything) were quiet as mice.

This shouldn't be taken as some massive warning sign for Trick on the main roster, but Triple H will have to be careful with him going forwards. No, this didn't work. No lasting damage done. Creative will say they had to try it. Onto the next.
