Downs…

6. Ignoring WWE History, Part 87

WWE loves to cite its own history whenever and however possible… except when they suddenly don’t. We all know the most famous example, which comes up every January when they talk about how only two men have entered the Royal Rumble at #1 and won, and one of them is Shawn Michaels. (But at least we understand the reason for that.)

As the Intercontinental Championship ladder match was getting underway, Michael Cole went through his usual pre-programmed spiel about the IC title, noting how it’s been held by more than a dozen WWE Hall-of-Famers, including a bunch of big names. He then noted that several top stars have held the strap, including The Miz, “who’s held the title more than just about anyone.”

Um, Miz has held the IC title eight times, with the record-holder of nine title reigns being Chris Jericho. You might have heard of him. But since he’s in AEW, he’s dead to WWE.

It would be like Major League Baseball mentioning that Hank Aaron has hit more home runs than almost anyone in the sport, and then not name-dropping Barry Bonds. It’s just a petty, stupid comment.

If you wanted an easy way around it, Cole could have simply said, “The Miz has held the Intercontinental Championship more than any active WWE superstar.” At least that would have been a true superlative.
