5 Ups & 6 Downs From WWE Raw (Feb 6 - Results & Review)

UPS…

5. Zayn’s Simple And Effective Interview

Last year, Sami Zayn was at the epicenter of the biggest storyline in WWE, first as a member of the Bloodline and then as the guy raging against the group and main-eventing the first night of WrestleMania 39.

Fast-forward to 2024, and Sami has been in a bit of limbo, losing matches to Drew McIntyre and getting tossed from the Royal Rumble, leaving him without a clear direction for WrestleMania XL. During an interview taped before the show, Zayn talked about how good his past year was and how he was viewed by Triple H and others last year as Rocky Balboa, an underdog who earns respect just by fighting and eventually reaches the mountaintop.

Sami though made it clear that he doesn’t consider himself an underdog anymore and needs to prove to himself and to others that he’s the guy by winning a World Title. It was the kind of goal-setting statement that a babyface looking to chart a new course for himself would deliver, not lamenting his current lot but taking it as another challenge to overcome.

It’s crazy to think it, but 15 months ago, no one would have taken Sami seriously if he said he wanted to be World Champion, but today, that interview sounded more like a spoiler than a wish.

Scott is a former journalist and longtime wrestling fan who was smart enough to abandon WCW during the Monday Night Wars the same time as the Radicalz. He fortunately became a fan in time for WrestleMania III and came back as a fan after a long high school hiatus before WM XIV. Monday nights in the Carlson household are reserved for viewing Raw -- for better or worse.
