When it was announced a few weeks ago that John Cena would celebrate the 20th anniversary of his WWE debut on Raw, your head immediately went toward whether he would spar with an old rival or possibly set up a SummerSlam feud. Rumors have flown around that he’s being programmed against Theory, so maybe that would come to a head in the ring.

Instead, Cena’s in-ring promo was just a straightforward heartfelt speech thanking the fans for empowering him, teaching him, and keeping him humble. He spoke about being a better person because of them and being grateful to be himself.

Cena also said he didn’t know when he’d step back in the ring, but he knew he would at some point. But there was no hint that he was doing it at SummerSlam. Regardless, this was just a nice, simple segment, and that’s more than fine.
