5 Ups And 2 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (May 30)

1. Ziggler Spoils Styles' Homecoming

Last night saw WWE call on one of their favourite booking techniques: having a wrestler lose cleanly in his or her hometown. It was AJ Styles' turn this time, and with SmackDown taking place in Atlanta, Georgia, he lost a decisive pinfall to Dolph Ziggler in the night's main event. It's a result that has already caused controversy among the viewership, but it came on the back of a decent match.

It wasn't up to the usual SmackDown main event standards, but it was still enjoyable. 'The Showoff' produced his best performance since last year's feud with The Miz, and while the closing stretch felt rather disjointed, it wasn't enough to drag the rest of the match down. A very solid effort from bell-to-bell, and about as good as we can expect from Ziggler in 2017.

The result is baffling, of course. Ziggler has been booked like a joke for months, but just scored a decisive victory over the consensus best wrestler in the company. It'll ultimately mean nothing in the long-run, however. Dolph gets a nice rub for now, but wins and losses are soon forgotten about in WWE, and AJ's credibility is too strong to be derailed by such a loss. Thus, the match was a net positive, and any damage done by the outcome will soon be undone.
