5 Ups And 2 Downs From Last Night's NXT (April 1)

2. I Unironically Love This

Joaquin Wilde
NXT

This is categorically going to blow up in my face when it all gets revealed, but an unmarked black van pulling up in the NXT car park, followed by a few men in $5 Lucha masks strongarming a wrestler in the back of it and us never seeing them again is brilliant TV. It's comprised something like 120 seconds over the last 3 weeks by my god has it popped me daft both times.

I'd love to offer some clever insight into why this delights me so much, but I'm not sure I can. It's likely a by-product of NXT's largely one-note approach (everything is always intense all of the time) making random irreverent segments feel fresh and welcome. Robert Stone being a dork is not particularly good, for example, but he does provide variety.

Where we'll see Mendoza or Wilde next nobody knows, and that level of mystery brings with it interest. Will they return brainwashed? Will they return evil? Will they return at all? These are the subplots you want to be obsessing over in pro-wrestling and, while it's not exactly going to win any awards, it's a nice break from the norm.
