5. Improved Matches

One of the deserved criticisms of the first Mae Young Classic easily had to be overall match quality. While there were several accomplished wrestlers and some standout matches, there were plenty of moments where the in-ring quality wasn’t up to par.

Wednesday’s opening episode featured the first four matches of the 16-bout first round, so it’s a small sample, but already things looked improved from last year. None of the matches were bad or embarrassing. In fact, all four ranged from perfectly acceptable to pretty damn good.

If this continues into future episodes, it will be a marked overall improvement over last year’s MYC, which is what you ideally want from a tournament like this.
