5 Ups And 3 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Mar 21)
2. The Women Lose Their Focus
SmackDown's women have enjoyed as much airtime as almost anyone else on the show since July. While Raw struggles to promote anyone but the champion and her immediate challenger, SD typically features a number of concurrent storylines, inside the title scene and out. Everyone has a purpose in the division, and for the most part, each is given an ample platform every week.
Last night was the exception, however. The blue brand's women were given just a couple of minutes to impress during Becky Lynch vs. Carmella and the ensuing angle. The match lasted less than a minute before Natalya (who was on commentary) interfered for a no contest finish. Mickie James and Alexa Bliss eventually got involved, and the SmackDown Women's Champion was left standing tall.
The segment was too short and abrupt to leave a lasting impact, and did little to build excitement for WrestleMania 33's hastily thrown together SD Women's Title match. At this point, the women are just spinning their wheels ahead of Orlando. None of them have a specific purpose within this crowded multi-woman feud, and while the match might be a lot of fun, the division will be better served when it's over.
