Henry Cejudo announces his retirement immediately after his win over Dominick Cruz at #UFC249... pic.twitter.com/V6kZCYJutn
Well, this was an unexpected turn of events. When Joe Rogan went to speak to Henry Cejudo following the first defense of his UFC bantamweight title, most expected him to call out Jose Aldo or at least one of the other contenders at 135lb. Instead, he explained that he'd decided to retire from competing.
Now it's difficult to figure out if Cejudo is actually serious or if he's playing one of his games. On one hand, the man has competed at the highest level in two of the most physically demanding sports you could ever compete in and won gold in both of them. Despite being 33-years old, he's spent most of his life in combat sports, so it makes sense that he might want to take a step back.
However, it is Henry Cejudo and it wouldn't be at all surprising if this was some elaborate plan of his to use the hashtag "Return of the King" at some point to try and get a bigger fight. A retirement of an athlete of Cejudo's calibre should be celebrated, but due to his awkward antics, it difficult to know what's real and what's not.
