5 Ups And 7 Downs From Last Night's WWE Raw (May 13)

6. Shane McMahon, Juggernaut

Look, it’s understandable that the announcers have to build up all the matches and treat the wrestlers as serious threats to each other.

But pitching that The Miz needs to be afraid of Shane McMahon? Come on. Corey Graves did just that as highlights from SmackDown showed Shane and the B-Team attacking Miz, saying he would caution Miz because he would be “all alone with Shane” in a steel cage.

*Snort*

Sorry, that was serious?

Shane’s entire wrestling “career” since returning to WWE has been predicated on using plunder to his advantage to cover his inadequacies in the ring. But according to Graves, we’re supposed to equate the 50-year-old executive with fewer than 100 televised matches over the past 20 years to a former WWE, Intercontinental, United States and Tag Champion with 700 televised bouts.

Maybe if Shane brought backup with him, we could buy it, but this continued effort to sell McMahon as a threat will continue to get “downs” in this column.

Scott is a former journalist and longtime wrestling fan who was smart enough to abandon WCW during the Monday Night Wars the same time as the Radicalz. He fortunately became a fan in time for WrestleMania III and came back as a fan after a long high school hiatus before WM XIV. Monday nights in the Carlson household are reserved for viewing Raw -- for better or worse.
