5 Ways AEW Is More Effective With Their Roster Than WWE
1. AEW's Creative Is... Well, More Creative
Before Aleister Black stepped out of his dark room to, twice, pick a fight with Buddy Murphy - in two excellent matches - what was the last WWE storyline that did not involve romance, a title, or a controversial pay-per-view in Saudi Arabia? For a promotion that is more sports-entertainment than wrestling, WWE has proven themselves incapable of producing captivating storylines.
AEW has not been perfect, but their creative team delivered stories throughout 2019 that were compelling. The Omega-Moxley rivalry steadily grew in brutality before reaching a crescendo in an ultra-violent unsanctioned match at Full Gear. The Rhodes brothers five-star, generation vs. generation, clash at Double Or Nothing was nothing short of a classic. Both Shawn Spears and Maxwell Jacob Friedman turned heel at Cody's expense last year.
Even when AEW has resorted to prop-wrestling it has outdone WWE. When AEW had their Dynamite Dozen Battle Royal - for the beautiful AEW Diamond Ring - they ensured that the eventual victor, MJF, was both a rising star and an insufferable winner. What has the OC done since winning the title of "best tag team in the world"? What ever became of Braun Strowman's green belt he earned by winning The Greatest Royal Rumble?
Yes, so far The Dark Order has been underwhelming, but at least it has been in an attempt to try something different. The writers in any promotion will occasionally miss the mark, but AEW consistently produces more creative and believable storylines than WWE.
