They are very fondly-remembered by fans of the Attitude Era, but The Rock and Sock Connection were only a duo for a couple of months all told. The Rock and Mick 'Mankind' Foley began teaming one, because they had great chemistry together and, two, because Foley's knackered knees were giving him such grief that he knew it was time to retire soon. He was saving himself physically by taking on a lighter workload.

Foley called it a day with regards to his full-time in-ring career in February 2000 and Rock stopped being a full-time WWE performer in the summer of 2002 when Hollywood successfully courted him. His appearances became fewer and farther between and most suspected that his last WWE match would be him putting Goldberg over at Backlash in April 2003.

That was until later that year, however, when he confirmed a one-night-only return at the historic WrestleMania XX in March 2004. The Great One came to the aid of his former partner, who was being targeted by Evolution's Randy Orton, Batista and Ric Flair. Rock's intervention led to a 3-on-2 handicap match at 'Mania.

The angles leading up to it (including a 'This is Your Life' segment for Foley) were effective and the match itself was a riot. In particular, The Nature Boy and the People's Champion looked to be having the time of of their lives as they hammed it up for the Madison Square Garden crowd. This was also a far better match than any Rock and Sock had as a team in late '99.

Rock and Sock lost on that night with Foley succumbing to an RKO, but the match and their performance was a true highlight of a stacked show. After it, Foley would move on to making the Legend Killer a genuine superstar and Rock would return to the bright lights of the movie world, not wrestling a WWE match for another eleven years.
