50 Best WCW Moments Ever
2. Goldberg Wins The World Title
Sting was fully into his 'Crow' rebirth, the nWo was running rampant and Monday Nitro was the hottest weekly on wrestling TV by the time a boots n' tights squash artist called Bill Goldberg debuted in September 1997. The newcomer began racking up victory after victory, and fan signs started popping up on shows following his impressive win/loss record.
WCW let support build for Goldberg before putting the United States Title on him in April 1998. Less than three months later, Bill was pinning Hollywood Hogan to become the brand new World Champion. The best thing about it? All of this felt exceptionally organic. Nothing about Goldberg's rise from no-nonsense newbie to romping, stomping main eventer was forced.
The promotion's fanbase craved more and more.
On 6 July '98, Goldberg sprinted through Hogan to become a double champ in front of an enthralled Georgia Dome. Over 40,000 folks lost their minds. WCW did take some flak for putting the match on free telly rather than on pay-per-view, but ratings were king to Eric Bischoff.
PPV or not, Bill's big night was historic and is still recapped today - it's one of the few WCW moments WWE tip their cap to.
