As a match, this WrestleMania 10 main event was a disappointment. But let’s face it: Bret Hart versus Yokozuna was never going to be an in-ring classic. The Hitman’s victory at Mania represented much more than just the babyface sending fans home happy. It was an admission by Vince McMahon that Hart was indeed a top guy deserving of carrying the WWF Championship.

Hart had been embarrassed and marginalized as a top guy, losing to Yokozuna at WM 9. He was shunted down the card while Lex Luger stepped in to challenge Yoko – and to replace Hulk Hogan as WWF’s muscle-bound top babyface. Hart would find his way back into the mix, only to finally topple Yoko and become the top guy in the promotion. It was a well-deserved victory that had more meaning than you could see on the surface.
