Pros:

1. Highly-skilled light heavyweight wrestler

2. The Hurricane gimmick was an excellent comedy act

3. Longest-reigning Cruiserweight Champion in WWE history

Cons:

1. Vince didn’t have much faith in the Cruiserweight division to begin with

2. Didn’t have any hope of going beyond the mid-card once he started wrestling under his own name

3. Keiji Mutoh is not impressed with that Shining Wizard

Considering that the success of WWE’s Attitude Era was built on realistic characters, I wouldn’t blame you for scratching your heads at the idea of a superhero character on RAW. But that’s exactly what happened to the former Shane Helms when he became ‘the Hurricane’.

But instead of languishing with it, Helms embraced it, becoming one of the funniest characters on the entire show. His strange manner of speaking and his even stranger mannerisms were hilarious, and he was actually able to work well in many comedy segments, including his famous short rivalry with the Rock.

Of course, once that ran its course, he unmasked and started wrestling under his own name. As the serious Gregory Helms, he got to show off more traditional wrestling, which allowed him to shine in the ring, culminating in his year-long reign as Cruiserweight Champion.

All in all, Helms was an excellent mid-carder who did his job well, and even though he was never expected to go any further than that, he managed to get a consistent reaction.

Final Rating: ***1/2
