50 Worst Wrestling Moments Of The 2020s (So Far)

4. Zombies Ate My Miz

At WrestleMania Backlash 2021, something truly appalling unfolded. A wretched, fake-feeling abomination of a thing. The Miz wrestled Damian Priest.

Worse still, the ring was surrounded by zombies.

This was a tie-in with Zack Snyder's post-apocalyptic horror heist ‘Army Of The Dead’. The film itself wasn’t bad - an easy, gory watch that peaked with a genuinely excellent prologue. It went too long, as most things do these days, with its 148 minute run-time. We’re doing Batista kills zombies here, people. We’re not remaking Gone With The Wind. Or watching Triple H do a single WrestleMania match.

The tie-in match was diabolical, undermined by the most omni-broken logic imaginable. Suspending your disbelief for the Miz’s offence is genuinely difficult enough as it is; to engage with this match, you had to believe that zombies are real. OK. It’s just a bit of fun. You probably don’t watch WWE for Volk Han-style technical realism, after all.

This didn’t even work in its own hyper-generous context because the zombies, acting as lumberjacks, weren’t that hungry for brains. They stayed stationed at ringside until Priest won. Bizarrely, given that the Miz and Priest were under threat of being buried alive, a bland wrestling match broke out far too often. Imagine doing a bad diving wheel kick when your agonising death is imminent.

The zombies ingested the Miz at the finish.
