6 Candidates To Improve AEW's Commentary
5. Mike Tenay
From the voice of ECW, to one of the many voices of WCW. Mike Tenay has had his own fair share of accolades throughout his tenure with WCW and TNA. He took home the Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s best television announcer while with WCW in 1997, and for three years straight with TNA from 2002 to 2005. In fact, a lot of the worst mistakes made by TNA almost feel forgivable when you have Tenay making the calls. He even managed to make Taz have some of his best commentary moments, which seems like any oxymoron.
Tenay has that classic, boxing blow-for-blow style that just manages to make everything have that big fight feel. And with his knowledgeable approach and AEW’s style of tracking wins and losses, this could be a great pairing. This would also allow Excalibur a little more freedom to explore his character and maybe even play the heel if he so chooses. Or they can remain in the middle and keep it a more traditional sportscast which again plays right into the strengths of a sportsman like Tenay.
The drawback will be that people will say that AEW is TNA 2.0. But when you’re actually taking the things that TNA did right and capitalizing on them, why is that such a bad thing? The great commentary didn’t ruin their company. What channel are iMPACT on now? Anybody know?
