6 Candidates To Improve AEW's Commentary

2. Matt Striker

From teacher, to wrestler, to announce booth. After about three years in WWE as a wrestler, Striker instead flourished calling the action. He took over commentary work for WWE’s failed ECW experiment back in August 2008. This is where Matt found his true calling. He even won the 2008 Slammy Award (not prestigious by any means but an accolade nonetheless) for announce team of the year with Todd Grisham.

Matt would later move to SmackDown, and remained there until 2011. That alone should show that Striker has the skills necessary but he would do even more to solidify his name after leaving WWE in 2013. He became the lead announcer for Lucha Underground in 2014, then commentated on both AAA’s Lucha Libre World Cup and Triplemania XXIII for the English language team. He would even partner with JR for NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 9 and joined Kevin Kelly for their King of Pro-Wrestling and Wrestle Kingdom 10 events.

With such a stacked list of events under his belt, Striker may be one of the most underrated and decorated commentators in the business currently. Add in his familiarity with Ross and plug and play charisma, and he has all the makings of the perfect candidate. Although, sticking with the theme of former wrestlers who commentate there may be one bigger name left that might work…
