6 Candidates To Improve AEW's Commentary
3. Diamond Dallas Page
People forget DDP's career started not just as a manager, but also a commentator. Page did commentary work in both FCW back in the early ‘90s as well as some work in the booth with WCW as well. Although that was some time ago, almost 30 years of being an excellent entertainer in other areas will hide that rust well. And with appearances at both All In and Double or Nothing already under his belt, the relationship is clearly there.
The nice thing about DDP for this role is that he brings a lively, upbeat personality to a commentary team that is in desperate need of a boost of charisma. You allow Page to be your storyteller who keys in on the drama of it all. Then you have Ross and Excalibur left with the bulk of trading calls on the action which allows everybody to play to their strengths. Balance is the key to a good commentary team, and what better way to achieve that than with a yoga instructor.
Plus, name recognition is a key factor here. Half of the battle to getting people to feel comfortable with a sudden change in announcer is by having a solid reputable name step in. You have that with a Hall of Fame inductee like DDP. And if nothing else, just think of the great yoga banter between him and JR.
