6 Devastating WWE Defeats John Cena Suffered At SummerSlam

6. Edge Defeats Cena At SummerSlam 2006 Thanks To Some Help

The Cena rivalry with Edge in 2006 was something that truly benefited both guys. For Cena, he found the right kind of heel that wasn't afraid to cheat or do anything underhanded in order to win. Edge wasn't afraid to push the limits in any way. For Edge, Cena was one of his best opponents because he had credibility and when we saw hang with him we knew that Edge had arrived as a main event player. They brought out the best in each other. Edge walked into this one with Lita by his side and he also had the WWE Title in his possession. Going into the match, the expectation was that Cena would win since the show was in his hometown of Boston. There were multiple times where it looked like Cena was going to win, but he couldn't get the job done. It was a creative, old school style finish. Edge fought of the STFU to crawl to the ropes. When the ref was telling Cena to let go, Lita put Brass Knucks on the hand of Edge without the ref seeing it. Thanks to a Lita distraction (she actually jumped on Edge's back while he was in FU position), the ref didn't notice when Edge nailed Cena in the back of the head with a Brass Knucks punch. As Edge covered Cena for the win, Jim Ross was freaking out and even called Edge a "son of a bi**h." They did a rematch one month later at Unforgiven in Edge's hometown of Toronto where Cena was able to win the WWE Title from him in an awesome TLC match so they did it where each guy won a match in the other man's hometown.
