6 Short-Lived WWE Gimmick Matches You Forgot The Undertaker Innovated

1. Last Ride Match

Less than a year after resurrecting his 'Deadman' persona, The Undertaker would innovate another eerie type of match that revolved around his supernatural gimmick - the Last Ride match.

Named after one of his most iconic finishing moves, this one was an anything-goes style contest which stipulated that you had to beat your opponent unconscious and then place their lifeless body in the back of a hearse before it was driven out of the arena.

Undoubtedly the most successful of all the matches on this list, we got two of them in a two-year period, with The Undertaker taking on JBL at No Mercy 2004 in the first-ever Last Ride match, before resurrecting the concept to put an end to his feud with Mr. Kennedy at Armageddon 2006. With decent action, jaw-dropping spots and a surprising amount of brutality, both Last Ride matches were thoroughly entertaining offerings that never allowed the gimmick to swallow up the contests.

Unlike the others, the Last Ride match never went out of fashion, nor was it rendered useless by a changing persona (he still has the same persona these days), it just never made a return following 2006 which is, quite frankly, a real shame. Perhaps the most underrated of The Undertaker's gimmick matches, it actually isn't all that gimmicky and would still work very well in today's product.
