6 Short-Lived WWE Gimmick Matches You Forgot The Undertaker Innovated
2. Biker Chain Match
'Taker's transition into his 'American Badass' persona at the turn of the century was in-line with the more realistic direction that the company was taking at the time. As a result, there was a major drought on all of his supernatural-themed matches. After all, a biker that loved to beat people up didn't have much need for a Casket Match now, did he?
However, this change in direction didn't stop him from introducing a new type of match that would, theoretically, complement his biker gimmick. Enter, the Biker Chain match: a barbaric contest in which the chain from 'The Phenom's motorcycle was suspended above the ring on a pole and the person lucky enough to grab it would be allowed to use it in the match.
The match type made its debut at No Mercy 2003 when 'Taker took on Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship. It was pretty much your average object-on-a-pole match and, unfortunately wasn't even one of the pair's best in-ring contests. Furthermore, like most of his early concept matches, it all backfired due to interference when Vince McMahon got involved and prevented him from grabbing the chain, ultimately costing him the match.
As The Undertaker would soon return to his legendary 'Deadman' persona, the Biker Chain match became nothing more than a one-and-done concept which we'll probably never see again.
