6 Superstars Whose Gimmicks Were Totally Ripped Off From Comics

2. John Cena And Superman

John Cena Superman This is by far the most obvious comparison on this list. How could you include a list of comic book character gimmicks in wrestling without including the man who has been unofficially crowned €˜Superman€™ by the Internet Wrestling Community? Superman, or Kal€™El, is the prototypical hero; he is supernaturally strong and has unmatched fortitude (barring exposure to Kryptonite). He is guided by a very strong personal moral code, and uses his powers for the betterment of humanity rather than for personal gain. He doesn€™t gloat from being in the spotlight, and prefers to live a simple life with his alter ego Clark Kent. Basically, Superman is the manifestation of what a good person should be, and how they should behave. John Cena is as close to Superman as any. He has demonstrated on many occasions that he is incredibly strong and durable. From lifting the heaviest of WWE Superstars onto his shoulders to somehow making wildly exaggerated superhuman comebacks in the ring, Cena has shown us that he is a tough man. He has also been the face of the WWE for over a decade, due in part to his appeal to women and children, as the wholesome, gold-hearted, never-give-up champion. He is also noted for his undying commitment to both the Make-A-Wish Foundation and supporting the United States Armed Forces, which also gets him popularity points from those communities as well. The key difference here is that Cena€™s character is more surreal than Superman. At least the comic book character had a weakness in Kryptonite, and demonstrated moments of actual weakness when dealing with loneliness or defeat. Cena, on the other hand, goes through the same process when in the ring: his opponent gets the advantage, then Cena €œmiraculously€ recovers, and overcomes the odds (which, by this point, probably don€™t exist for him), and the next day he€™s all smiles. This is one of the biggest reasons people dislike the so-called face of the WWE; his character is so unrealistic that he makes a humanoid alien from Krypton who can leap tall buildings in a single bound, shoot lasers out of his eyes and fly seem more human than him.
