6 Things That Must Happen At NXT TakeOver: Chicago
1. NXT Must Set Up Roode's Brooklyn Challenger
NXT TakeOver Brooklyn III will follow Chicago, and arguably this is the biggest show of the year for NXT. Sure, WrestleMania weekend comes into that, but the August Brooklyn show has become NXT's trademark. The first Brooklyn event saw Bayley defeat Sasha Banks for the NXT Women's Championship, whilst in 2016 Shinsuke Nakamura dethroned Samoa Joe as the King of NXT.
NXT can't justify throwing together a card for Brooklyn on the fly. In an ideal world, TakeOver: Chicago will end with a clear road to Brooklyn. With so much talent on NXT's roster, isn't it about time the NXT Championship was defended in a multi-man encounter once again?
Maybe more importantly, NXT needs to get out of this rut it is in with regards to repeat main events. Over the last two and a half years, Bayley vs. Sasha Banks is the only TakeOver main event match that didn't close the show on more than occasion, and even that was a major re-match. NXT's third SummerSlam weekend spectacular deserves a fresh main event.
Whether that is Drew McIntyre, Aleister Black, Kassius Ohno, or Roderick Strong remains to be seen, but the inevitability of the main event re-match needs to end.
NXT TakeOver: Chicago is shaping up to be an absolute barnstormer of an event. When a ladder match featuring Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa may be the weakest match on the card, you know you are in for a very special evening indeed.
