SummerSlam '92 is arguably the most iconic SummerSlam event of all time. The show was special for a whole host of reasons, not least because it took place in Wembley Stadium in front of a record crowd of 80,355, the only major WWE pay-per-view to take place outside of North America.

The main event saw hometown hero The British Bulldog send eighty thousand people home happy when he defeated brother-in-law Bret 'The Hitman' Hart for the WWF Intercontinental Championship. It was one heck of a match, although if the original plans had been followed it may never have happened as Shawn Michaels was originally booked to defeat Hart for the title.

The plan for Bret to lose the Intercontinental Championship was always on the cards however, as he was clearly a star on the rise by the summer of 1992. Some two months after being pinned by Davey Boy Smith at Wembley, Hart was making Ric Flair tap to the Sharpshooter in front of his own native crowd in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The dropping of the IC Championship was a vital stop along the way, and Bret lost nothing in falling short against Bulldog at SummerSlam.

Well, he lost the Intercontinental Championship, but the pain of that was soon replaced by the euphoria of being the WWF Champion.
